Join Garrett Hanks and Jesse Kruthaupt from Trout Unlimited on a free guided hike to South Baldy Mountain. The hike will start at Rainbow Lake and will work its way through the West Elk Wilderness with 360-degree views at South Baldy. This is a moderate to difficult hike that begins at 10,996 feet in elevation and steadily climbs into high alpine meadows. Group size will be limited to 10 in this wilderness area - so sign up before spots are filled!
During this hike, we’ll hear how local anglers have shaped the GPLI proposal for the protection of public lands in Gunnison County and how healthy lands support healthy streams. The landscape south of the current West Elk Wilderness is proposed for a combination of wilderness additions and special management areas that will protect the areas naturalness, wildlife corridors, and riparian systems.
We will meet at Mochas parking lot at 8:30 AM to carpool to the trailhead. We will be out until late afternoon so please come prepared with hiking boots, water, lunch, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain gear and anything else you may need.
