Hike Poverty Gulch with the Coal Creek Watershed Coalition

  • 4-Way Stop 601 Elk Avenue Crested Butte, CO, 81224 United States

Join the Gunnison Public Lands Initiative and the Coal Creek Watershed Coalition on a free hike up Poverty Gulch.

We'll learn about the protections GPLI has proposed for this area and the work the Coal Creek Watershed Coalition has done to improve the quality of the upper Slate River Watershed.

The hike will start at Pittsburg and will follow the dirt road to the base of Cascade Mountain. If time allows, we'll continue to  Baxter Basin. This is a beautiful riparian area with waterfalls,  late season wildflowers, and spectacular views of Paradise Divide and the Slate River basin.

Please come prepared with water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellant and any other materials you will need to enjoy a full day hiking. The hike is moderate, with about 1000' elevation gain. We will hike to about 10,000' and then turn around, for a total mileage of about 4 miles.

We will meet at the 4-Way stop in Crested Butte at 8:00 am to carpool to the trailhead. We will likely be back sooner, but could be out as late as 2 pm. For more information, please email info@gunnisonpubliclands.org or call (970) 390-6689.
