Join the Gunnison Public Lands Initiative and the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival on a guided hike up the Caves/Walrod Gulch Trail on Saturday, June 18th. We will meet at the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival Office (409 2nd Street, Crested Butte).
As we are partnering with the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival for this event, the cost is $65. All proceeds will go the Festival.
The Walrod Gulch meanders across a southern facing slope in the Cement Creek Valley.Catching early summer sun, this is the perfect spot for the season’s first wildflowers. The Gunnison Public Lands Initiative has proposed the Double Top/Cement Creek area for a Special Management Area designation, hoping to protect the area’s prime wildlife habitat and excellent trails. We’ll talk about what permanent protection could mean for this area and what we can do as a community of naturalists to protect the places we love.
The pace of this hike will be moderate but the trail begins with a steep climb out of Walrod Gulch. The total elevation gain will be 2,400 feet. It will take us 30 minutes from the Crested Butte Community School to the trailhead and we expect the hike to be 4 hours, so plan for at least 5 hours out and about.
The is trail is well packed, but please be prepared with good hiking shoes, warm layers and rain gear (you never know in the mountains) plus lunch, water, insect repellant, and sunscreen. The effort is worth it – we’ll be rewarded some of the most delicate wildflowers and sweeping views!
We will meet at the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival Office at 8 am. For more information, please call (970) 390-6689 or email email@example.com. Please register at the Crested Butte Wildflower Website
