Horseback Ride on Mendicant Ridge

Join Tony Prendergast, longtime Crawford resident and head guide of Landsend Outfitting, on a horseback ride to Mendicant Ridge.

Starting near Bald Mountain Reservoir we’ll wind our way to the top of Mendicant Ridge, where we’ll take in spectacular 360 degree views and GPLI’s lands proposed for protection. We’ll ride through wildflower meadows and spruce forests, see majestic mountains, and learn about the landscape.

The roundtrip ride will be approximately 8 – 10 miles, last approximately 6 hours, and reach an elevation of about 11,800 feet.  The ride will be on moderately steep terrain including a short but exposed section of trail along a rocky ridge. Elevation gain is about 1000’.

Please bring a sack lunch, plenty of water, and sunscreen. Make sure to wear long pants and boots, and to bring along a few warm layers including a rain jacket. Dogs must be left at home!

We will meet at the 4-way stop in Crested Butte at 6:15 am and at the Wal-Mart parking lot at 7:00 am to carpool to the trailhead. The trailhead is about two hours away from Gunnison.

Landsend Outfitters has generously donated the use of their horses for participants without their own mounts.

The event is free and limited to the first ten participants. If you must cancel your reservation, please let us know as soon as possible. This event usually fills up fast and requires a significant amount of work on the part of Landsend Outfitters -- please don't leave us with an empty spot! Landsend Outfitters will provide six horses, all other riders must bring their own mounts.

Due to the possibility of muddy roads, trails and lightning exposure, the event will be cancelled in the case of rain.
